The Role of Transport Infrastructure in Regional

Abstract. Transport infrastructure is one of the most important factors influencing regional economic development, economic integration, and long-term competitiveness. Efficient transportation systems improve connectivity between urban and rural areas, facilitate trade activities, and increase the mobility of labor, goods, and services. Modern infrastructure networks, including highways, railways, airports, and ports, play a significant role in reducing transportation costs, improving logistics performance, and enhancing market accessibility. Regions with developed transportation systems are generally more attractive for domestic and foreign investment because they provide greater operational efficiency and support industrial and commercial expansion. This article examines the relationship between transport infrastructure and regional economic growth from economic, social, and technological perspectives. The study analyzes how transportation systems contribute to productivity growth, employment generation, regional integration, and business development. In addition to economic benefits, transport infrastructure also improves access to education, healthcare, and public services, thereby increasing social welfare and reducing regional inequalities. The article further explores the impact of modern technologies such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Big Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) on transportation management and operational efficiency. The research also discusses major challenges related to transport infrastructure development, including high investment costs, environmental issues, traffic congestion, and unequal regional investment distribution. The findings emphasize that sustainable and smart transportation systems are essential for achieving balanced regional development, environmental sustainability, and long-term economic stability in the modern global economy.
