The Phenomenon of Ismayil Hidayatzadeh in the Art of Directing
Abstract
Ismayil Hidayatzadeh was one of our outstanding directors who guided the theater art of Azerbaijan and distinguished himself with his creative features. The performances that the artist staged during the 1920s-1930s became an important stage in the formation of the art of directing in the Azerbaijani theater. He added modern interpretations to the works of many classical writers and playwrights, contributed to the development of the concept of a realistic director in the Azerbaijani theater and to many works of philosophical significance. The performances he created, “Seyavush”, “Shahnameh” and “Koroghlu”, were selected for the psychological approach of the director and won high praise from the audience as well as critics. Hidayatzadeh’s directorial talent manifested itself in Eastern classics, and was also selected for his directorial style in examples of modern Azerbaijani dramaturgy. His direction of the structure of poetic works and staging of the first Azerbaijani ballet are clear indicators of these qualities.
His directorial work is distinguished by his steps towards the modernization of Azerbaijani theater art and the development of our national theater. The article analyzes the artist's directorial approach, differences in interpretation, the innovations he brought to theater art at that time, his directorial talent, as well as his invaluable role in our national theater and the content of the works he directed.
