The Issue of Originality and Authenticity of Works Created

With Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

Theoretical concepts of artificial intelligence were formed in the 1950s, but in 2018, the artwork "Edmond de Belamy" created using GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) technology sold at Christie's auction for 43 times its expected price, creating a sensation, and thus artificial intelligence began to be widely analyzed again from an art criticism perspective. The mass release of artificial intelligence programs based on neural networks and deep learning that convert text to images, such as "DALL-E" and "Midjourney" in 2021 and 2022, has inherently raised the question of originality and authenticity of artworks created through artificial intelligence. This article examines the level of originality and authenticity of artworks created with artificial intelligence from art criticism and philosophical perspectives. However, legal aspects such as copyright are not addressed here, and analyses are conducted directly regarding the works created from the aspect of artistic creativity.

Keywords: artificial intelligence, art, art criticism, originality, authenticity, philosophy
