Interactive Methods in Teaching Foreign Languages
Abstract
The increasing importance of foreign language learning in the modern era has led to the development of diverse teaching methods, each with specific strengths and limitations. This article provides a concise overview of traditional methods – such as the grammar-translation, natural, direct, audiolingual, audiovisual, conscious comparative, and communicative approaches – as well as non-traditional methods, including suggestopedic, conscious practice, linguo-sociocultural, explicit, implicit, problem-solving, learner-centered, “silent way,” lexical-translation, intensive, spaced repetition, and task-based communicative approaches. The essential features of each are briefly characterized.
Special emphasis is placed on communicative methods, which are widely recognized as the most effective in current practice. Techniques such as brainstorming, discussion, role-play, simulation, interviews, and problem-based speaking tasks are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, examples of interactive activities – including discussions, games, and task-based exercises – are presented to illustrate their potential in developing students’ oral communication skills. The article concludes that communicative and interactive approaches provide the most effective means of fostering fluency and active participation in foreign language learning.
