Indicator of Quality of Life in Schizophrenia Patients

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that alters an individual’s thinking, behavior, and emotional state, significantly impacting daily activities, social relationships, and overall well-being. The quality of life (QoL) in schizophrenia patients is closely linked to their physical health, psychological well-being, social interactions, employment opportunities, independent living skills, and adherence to treatment.

Physical health is notably affected due to metabolic issues, obesity, and other illnesses caused by psychotropic medications. Psychological well-being is characterized by challenges such as depression, lack of motivation, and emotional instability.

These patients often face difficulties in social relationships, leading to isolation. Support from family and friends can enhance their social participation and positively influence their psychological health. Unemployment and financial hardships further complicate their social and economic situation. (PLOS)

The level of daily independence varies-some patients can live entirely independently, while others require constant care. Consistent adherence to treatment is a key factor in improving QoL.

Stigmatization and societal attitudes affect these patients' social adaptation. To improve QoL, social support should be increased, employment opportunities expanded, and societal understanding strengthened.

Psychosocial support programs play a crucial role in integrating schizophrenia patients into society. These programs help develop patients’ communication skills and strengthen social relationships. Additionally, increasing employment opportunities can enhance their economic independence and self-confidence. Proper medical supervision and adherence to treatment regimens can alleviate the course of the disease. A compassionate and supportive societal attitude towards individuals living with schizophrenia facilitates a more balanced and dignified life for them.
