Huseyn Javid's Language is the Returning to the Root of the

Azerbaijan Language

Abstract

This article discusses Huseyn Javid’s attitude toward the Turkic literary language. As an independent thinker, Huseyn Javid held a unique and distinguished position in the Azerbaijani literary language. He began his creative work during a complex and controversial period in the development of Azerbaijani literary language—the early 20th century, a time when the language was gravitating toward the Turkic literary tradition. His language reflects both his cultural and intellectual mindset and the influence of the emerging and developing Turkism movement of the time. In this context, the facts representing the state of normative literary language in the early 20th century are grouped and analyzed. The phonetic norms characteristic of Huseyn Javid’s language are derived from the phonetic system of the Turkic literary language. Key phonetic features observed include sound alternations and phenomena resulting from phonetic processes, which were not only specific to Huseyn Javid’s style but were also typical of the broader literary language of that era. Phonetic and lexico-grammatical features reflecting traces of both the Turkic literary language and our classical literary works in the poet’s language are substantiated with examples from Huseyn Javid’s writings.
