Epidemiological Situation of Chickenpox Infection in the
Guba–Khachmaz Economic Region
Abstract
The study examines the epidemiological characteristics of chickenpox infection in the Quba–Khachmaz economic region during the years 2021–2022.
According to its design, this research is a retrospective epidemiological study. Official statistical data on the absolute number of chickenpox cases among children and adults in the Quba–Khachmaz economic region for 2021–2022 were obtained from Form No. 1, “On Infectious and Parasitic Diseases”, approved by Decree No. 19/5 dated December 9, 2010, of the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Based on the absolute number of chickenpox cases recorded in the Quba–Khachmaz (Quba, Khachmaz, Gusar, Siyazan, and Shabran) economic region, indicators related to age, sex, seasonality, intensity, and extensiveness of the disease were determined.
The results of the retrospective epidemiological analysis show that in both 2021 and 2022, the number of chickenpox cases was lower among women compared to men. Among children aged 0–17, the number of chickenpox cases in 2021 was more than twice as high compared to individuals aged 18 and above, and also more than in 2022.
In 2021, the highest intensity indicator of chickenpox infection was recorded in Shabran district at 2.6 cases per 1,000 population, and in 2022, again in Shabran district, at 10.2 cases per 1,000 population.
The seasonal maximum was observed in Shabran district in the spring of 2021 with 89.0%, and in Khachmaz district in the autumn of 2022 with 75.5%.
According to the WHO document updated on September 5, 2018, titled “Standards for Epidemiological Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases”, it is reported that annually, 4.2 million severe and complicated chickenpox cases and 4,200 fatal cases occur worldwide.
