An Analysis of Abu Mazin's Ode "The Philosophy of Life" From the

Scientific Point of View

Abstarct

Although the lyrical poems of Abu Madi have astonished readers in terms of their content, he has frequently been the subject of criticism with regard to the rules of prosody. This is because, in some of his poems, the poet deviates from the established rules of Arabic prosody, leading to variations in the metrical structure. These deviations did not go unnoticed by Arab literary scholars. While Arab critics have referred to this issue in general terms, to date, no academic study or book has been found that analyzes Abu Madi’s lyrical poems specifically within the framework of Arabic prosody. For this reason, in the present article, we have analyzed the qasida titled Falsafat al-Ḥayat by the poet, both in terms of content and meter. Given that the content of this poem has already been examined by various scholars, our main focus has been on its metrical analysis. It is worth noting that many Mahjar poets composed poetry without adhering to the rules of prosody. However, despite being a Mahjar poet, Abu Madi did not disregard these rules in all his poems—only in some. This, however, should not be interpreted as a lack of knowledge on his part. On the contrary, the poet has composed numerous metrically sound poems that also exhibit profound meaning, which demonstrate his mastery of classical prosody.
