The October 1917 Coup in Russia and its Impact on
Azerbaijan's Political Arena
Abstract
The 1917 Russian revolution radically changed the political structure of the empire with the events of February and October. As a result of the February Revolution, Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown and a provisional government was established. However, as this government failed to solve the economic and social problems in the country, the October Revolution led by the Bolsheviks took place and Soviet power was established. The main causes of the revolution included Russia's heavy defeats in the First World War, economic decline, food and fuel shortages, peasants' need for land and workers' harsh working conditions. Since the provisional government could not solve these problems, the bolsheviks gained political advantage under the slogan “All power to the Soviets!” The revolution led to the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and socialist ideology became official state policy. A new economic model was introduced, land was collectivized and industry was brought under state control. But these changes were accompanied by prolonged political repression and economic hardship. In terms of world history, the Russian revolution led to the strengthening of socialist movements and the beginning of an ideological conflict between the West and the Soviet Union. The consequences of the revolution played an important role in world politics under Soviet rule, which lasted until 1991. In our article, the October 1917 coup that took place in Russia and its impact on the political arena of Azerbaijan are analyzed using the methods of analysis, and comparison.
