Physiological Mechanism of Sleep

Abstract

Sleep is an absolutely necessary process for the organism of higher animals. A person spends one-third of his life in periodic sleep. Sleep, which covers about twenty-five years of an average seventy-five-year life, is extremely important for the regular functioning of the brain. It is known that long-term sleep deprivation leads to a weakening of physical and cognitive abilities, which can lead to death.

The most permanent and serious manifestation of sleep is the weakening of the activity of the nervous system, especially the activity of the cerebral cortex: the cessation of thought, the weakening of muscle tone, and the extinction of all types of sensations are also attributes of sleep.

Keywords: sleep physiology, phases of slow sleep and fast sleep, NonREM and REM sleep, paradoxical sleep, stages of sleep
