Memories of Novruz in the Works of Ahmad Javad

Abstract

As we know, folklore is an art form and a cultural expression that reflects a nation’s way of thinking, belief systems, and worldview. Every nation possesses its own folklore and ethnographic heritage that embodies its national identity. Like the great figures of world literature, Azerbaijan’s “Poet of the Republic,” Ahmad Javad, also portrayed the national traditions, beliefs, and rituals of his people in his works. This article analyzes lyrical excerpts from his writings that reflect springtime and Novruz holiday traditions, based on the broader context of folklore literature. The article substantiates the value of the author’s works as significant ethnographic sources. Symbols of nature are examined from both folkloric and ethnographic perspectives.

Keywords: Novruz, folklore, nature, fire, water, earth
