Abstract
The role of kinship terms in the formation of phraseological units in the Azerbaijani language and their additional semantic shades are widely analyzed.
The author shows that these terms denote not only family relations, but also the ethnocultural worldview of the people, the system of social relations and the connotative potential of the language. Through phrases such as” our cat gave birth to a “boy”, a brave son looks like an uncle “,” “inflexible to a brave uncle who hits”, it is explained how the images of a son/uncle are used in gender-oriented and ironic meanings. A special place in the article is also occupied by the concept of avunculat –structured family model. The social and psychological authority of uncle in Turkic peoples, including Azerbaijanis, and his guiding function in family relations are presented as a remnant of this model. Kinship terms also reflect national-cultural values and past social relations in stable combinations. According to the author, these terms form a separate semantic field in the Azerbaijani language, revealing the richness of the phraseological system and ethnolinguistic features of the language.
