Changes in Certain Blood Parameters During Chronic
Opportunistic Infections
Abstract
Opportunistic infections are diseases caused by microorganisms that become active when the immune system is weakened and are normally non-pathogenic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in some hematological and inflammatory indicators in individuals infected with chronic opportunistic infections (Toxoplasma gondii, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex virus type I, and mixed infections).
Blood samples from 238 individuals who applied to the clinical laboratory of the V. Y. Akhundov Scientific Research Institute of Medical Prevention between January and November 2024 were analyzed. Serological and hematological indicators were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, “Vector Best”) and a semi-automatic analyzer (Stat Fax 4700).
The results showed that in all infection groups, there was a decrease in the percentage of lymphocytes, an increase in the percentage of neutrophils, and an elevation in CRP levels.
