William Shakespeare’s Famous Plays on the Azerbaijani Stage
Abstract
When we look at the history of Azerbaijani theatre, we see that the plays of the famous English playwright William Shakespeare began to be staged in Azerbaijani theatres from the beginning of the last century. The ideas of humanism and freedom play a central role in the works of W.Shakespeare, a prominent representative of the Renaissance period. Since the beginning of the last century, the works of W.Shakespeare have been translated and performed on stage by talented actors in Azerbaijan. From the past to the present, our theatre directors have frequently turned to the works of W.Shakespeare. Adil Isgandarov, Mehdi Mammadov, Tofiq Kazimov, Azer Pasha Nematov, Vagif Ibrahimoglu, Behram Osmanov have staged interesting performances based on W.Shakespeare’s famous plays. The works of the playwright have been interesting for the theatre audience because they affect the depths of the human soul. We can note that W.Shakespeare’s works are still distinguished by their relevance today. The playwright’s plays such as “Machbeth”, “Othello”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Twelfth night”, “Hamlet”, “King Lear” are among the most frequently staged productions in our theatre. The plays of the great playwright W.Shakespeare continue to be staged in different styles even in modern times and enriching the repertoire of our theatres.
