The History of the Development of Mercenary

Activity and Legislation on Liability for it

Abstract

Currently, there are a number of international crimes that have become extremely difficult to combat. In the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, under the title "War Crimes," actions are outlined which are subject to strict penalties. One of these crimes is "mercenary activity," and the Criminal Code's Article 114 provides for severe punishments for such acts. According to this article, penalties are imposed not only on those who organize mercenaries and use them in specific military operations but also on the mercenaries themselves who participate in military operations. Article 114 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan states that the recruitment of mercenaries, their training, financing, and other forms of material support, as well as the use of them in military conflicts or operations, is punishable by imprisonment for a period of eight to twelve years.
