The Destroyed Cultural Heritage of Iravan: The Political and
Social Significance, Historical Changes and the Process of Disappearance of the Abbas Mirza Mosque
Abstract
The Abbas Mirza Mosque, located in Iravan, represents a significant example of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage and carries both political and social importance. Beyond serving as a religious place of worship, the mosque functioned as a central hub for the social life, national unity, and cultural identity of Azerbaijanis living in Iravan. Against the backdrop of historical events, it became a symbol of the community’s identity and existence, while also acting as a space for public discussions, educational initiatives, and solidarity. Thus, the Abbas Mirza Mosque should be regarded both as a political factor affirming the Azerbaijani presence in Iravan and as a cultural institution that strengthened social cohesion.
The Abbas Mirza Mosque was one of the key symbols of Azerbaijani cultural heritage in Iravan. It held significant political and social importance as a center of both religious and community life. However, over time, historical changes and destruction led to its complete disappearance.
