Study of Azimuth Measurement Devices During

Horizontal Well Drilling

Abstract

The article shows that the magnetometer-based measurement while drilling (MWD) system for horizontal wells determines the azimuth of the perturbation device at the bottom of the well during the drilling process using three-axis accelerometers and magnetometers. The geomagnetic device is sensitive to strong magnetic interference when using drilling fluid for azimuthing, and therefore, the rotation rate limiting filtering (RNCF) method is proposed to estimate the intended azimuth when using the gyroscope magnetometer-based MWD system.
The article shows that, first, it is considered appropriate to develop a new magnetic dynamic system whose output is observed by the magnetometer trio based on the Coriolis equation of any geomagnetic vector. Second, considering that the norm of the geomagnetic vector without interference during the short-term drilling process can be approximated as a constant, a norm limiting procedure is included in the Kalman filter.
