Modern Germanic Languages: The Role of English in the Germanic
Language Family
Abstract
Languages share commonalities due to their origins from a shared proto-language. This study aims to examine linguistic classifications of Germanic languages, particularly English, using the genealogical framework. The research employs comparative-historical and classification methods to trace the English language’s evolution from its inception to its present form. The findings indicate that modern English possesses a highly intricate phonetic and grammatical structure, shaped by interactions with at least twelve languages. The study’s practical application implies in its potential use for developing educational resources for English learners.
