Idioms in French and their Semantic Features

Abstract

The article examines the semantic features of idiomatic expressions, which play an important role in enriching the vocabulary of the French language.

İdioms those arose in connection with various events expressed true meaning when they first created. But over time they have become stable in the language and have been used figuratively they are a number of word groups that are more prone to metaphorization and as a result, many idioms have emerged. In French, idiomatic expressions formed by metaphorizing the names of animals and birds (un froid de canard, poser un lapin, une mère poule), the names human body parts (avoir le bras long, avoir les yeux plus gros que le ventre), food names (raconter des salades, les carottes sont cuites), and colors (voir la vie en rose, avoir la main verte) predominate.
