History of the Pharmacovigilance System and its Development in Azerbaijan
Abstract
Protecting people from the undesirable effects of medicines is an indispensable condition for the development of healthcare in every country, including the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), side effects of medicines are among the top ten causes of death in many countries of the world.
It should be noted that the idea that the use of medicines can cause harm to the patient that is not comparable to the expected benefit was not immediately considered. The “Thalidomide tragedy” that occurred in the middle of the last century (1957-1961) shocked everyone. Thalidomide changed the medical community’s understanding of drug safety monitoring and became the starting point for the creation of the Unified International Safety Monitoring System under the auspices of WHO. Currently, the safety of drugs, the occurrence of complications after pharmacotherapy is a global and urgent problem in medicine, as well as in pharmacy.
