Hindu Reform Movements and Their Relation to Islamic Sufism –
The Bhakti Movement as a Model
Abstract
The Bhakti movement and Islamic Sufism are two ancient spiritual phenomena in the Indian subcontinent, both embodying a profound pursuit of closeness to the divine and the attainment of spiritual perfection. Despite their differing religious roots, there is a noticeable intersection between them in terms of practices and objectives, raising questions about the nature of their relationship.
This research aims to explore the origins of the Bhakti movement, highlight its key principles and teachings, and identify the factors that contributed to its emergence. Additionally, it seeks to shed light on the interaction between Indian and Islamic civilizations in the subcontinent and understand how this interaction shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of the region.
