Examining the Lezgi Society from the Sociological Dimension:

the Example of Azerbaijan

Abstract

This study utilizes qualitative research methods, including literature review and regional data analysis, to examine the socio-cultural, economic, and political dynamics of the Lezgian community in Azerbaijan. The historical roots of the Lezgi people, their traditional structures, and cultural practices are analyzed alongside the challenges posed by modern developments such as globalization and urbanization. The research highlights the role of education, youth, and diaspora efforts in sustaining cultural identity. Furthermore, the article examines cross-border economic activities between Azerbaijan and Dagestan and explores how climate change affects the economic structure, leading to migration from rural areas.

Findings suggest that while digitalization offers new opportunities for preserving cultural identity, the decline in rural economies and limited political participation remain significant challenges. The study emphasizes the need for education policies that promote mother-tongue learning and state-level cooperation to enhance the socio-economic resilience of the Lezgian community.
