English as a Global Dominant Language: Its Impact on International Education, Cultural Assimilation, and Native Languages

 

Abstract

 

This article provides a multifaceted analysis of the global dominance of the English language and its impact on education, culture, and native languages. In the modern world, English functions not only as a means of international communication but also as a primary vehicle for knowledge, science, and technology. With the influence of globalization, English has permeated the educational and informational systems of many countries, resulting in certain risks for local languages and cultural identities.

The article emphasizes that the global spread of English presents both opportunities and challenges. In the context of Azerbaijan, the management of this process is particularly important. While increasing interest in English strengthens global integration, it simultaneously raises concerns about the marginalization of the native language and national values. The growing tendency among young people to favor English may, in the long run, lead to a weakening of national identity.

Moreover, the article highlights the necessity of establishing a balanced language and education policy. Without denying the benefits of English, such a policy must address its potential sociolinguistic consequences. The protection of the Azerbaijani language and local culture should proceed in parallel with English language instruction, supported by public awareness campaigns and the promotion of national cultural heritage.
