Development Trends of Regional Theatres:
The Context of Repertoire Policy
Abstract
This article explores the development trends of regional theatres in Azerbaijan between 1991 and 2024, with a specific focus on repertoire policy. Taking into account the socio-political and cultural environment of the post-independence period, the study analyzes which genre and stylistic directions have been prioritized in the selection of plays for regional stages. The paper examines the implementation of national theatre policies in the regions, the structural and financial challenges faced by theatres, the composition of creative teams, and the influence of local audience preferences on repertoire formation. Both classical and contemporary dramaturgy are comparatively evaluated in terms of their representation in regional theatres. The study concludes that repertoire policy has had a direct impact on the artistic and aesthetic development of regional theatre and that this policy often balances between centrally driven tendencies and local creative initiatives.
