Degrees of Adjectives in Historical Development
Abstract
The history of language is the history of the people. In order to study the history and distant past of a people, it is necessary to turn to its language, ancient oral and written monuments. The history of the Azerbaijani language also lives in the words that have become fossilized in its writings. The Azerbaijani language has a rich lexical, morphological, and syntactic structure. The historical development of adjectives, the path that degrees have historically taken, and the changes that have occurred in our language indicate the historical richness of adjectives and their degrees. While following the historical development of the adjective, we observe that in the ancient Turkic language, a number of words with color meaning were used, as well as in the sense of aspect: white and yellow south; black north; gold (red) west; blue east. Some adjectives of Turkish origin, black, red, blue, white, yellow, have lost their original meaning and gained new meanings. For example, the word gold is used more often in the sense of red in our written monuments. We can observe this in the comparisons of several linguists-scholars. The article refers to the ideas and works of A.Demirchizadeh, M.Shiraliyev, H.Mirzazadeh, S.Jafarov, M.Huseynzadeh B.Khalilov, etc., and makes comparisons.
