Climate Change Impact on the Tourism Sector:
Analysis and Comparison
Abstract. Climate change has a multifaceted and significant impact on the tourism sector, which is assessed from both an economic and an ecological perspective. The changes observed in the world and in Azerbaijan show that increasing global temperatures, the frequency of extreme weather events, rising sea levels and changes in ecosystems have both positive and negative impacts on tourism activity.
Positive impacts are mainly related to the creation of new tourism opportunities. For example, more favorable conditions for winter tourism in some regions, increased interest in ecotourism or the extension of some summer tourism seasons lead to increased economic income and stimulation of the local economy. Statistical data show that changes in weather conditions allow for the extension of the tourist season and the reduction of seasonal variability of some forms of tourism, which contributes to the development of hotel activities, local services and job creation.
On the other hand, negative impacts are more often associated with extreme weather events, melting glaciers, reduced water resources and damage to ecosystems. These processes disrupt tourists' travel plans, complicate the operation of tourism facilities and sometimes reduce the income of tourism regions. For example, the increase in storms, hurricanes and irregular weather conditions both increase security risks and lead to instability of tourist flows.
