Classification of Restored Toponyms in Karabakh After the War According to Their Primary Etymological Layers
Abstract
The study of onomastic units, particularly toponyms, which constitute a significant layer of a language’s vocabulary, is of great importance for researching the historical roots of peoples. One of the main indicators preserving the history of any nation is the names of the geographical areas it inhabits. After the 2020 Patriotic War, the restoration of the names of historical and geographical objects in the Karabakh region marked a new stage in Azerbaijani onomastics. This article examines the primary etymological origins of the restored place names in the liberated territories and classifies the toponyms according to the ancient Turkic layer, Iranian layer, Albanian layer, and modern period toponyms. Restoring these names to their original forms signifies the revival of historical memory, national identity, language, culture, religious values, and traditions in Karabakh.
