INTERNATIONAL ASPECT OF COMBATING THE CRIME OF MIGRANT SMUGGLING BY SEA

1. Introduction
The crime of migrant smuggling constitutes an act where an offender, to obtain material benefits, provides illegal entry into a state where a person is not a citizen or does not have a residence permit. The migrant trafficking is considered the fast-growing nationwide crime today, and the annual earnings of the organizations engaged in this crime are estimated at around $10 billion (Mallia, 2010: 8). The calculations show that 30-40 million (15-20%) out of the 191 million actual migrants in the world are illegal immigrants (UN Trends in Total Migrant Stock, 2003).
